One:
The
theme was the American Desert. We focused on the role
desert animals played in the storytelling and culture
of some of the desert tribes, such as the Navajo and Hopi.
We had the children choose an animal from this habitat
they thought best described them. We then asked the children
to make a drawing of that animal. We showed how many of
the tribes drew animals in petroglyphs and pictographs…and
how they were also used by the Navajos in their sandpaintings.

We then had the students create their own
sandpaintings of the animal they chose using colors of
sand common to the desert area. The resulting artwork
was amazing!
