Two:
The
theme this week was the Prairie/Plains. We began with
a Lakota story about the prairie dog and a race through
a herd of buffalo. We then focused more specifically on
how the buffalo was directly connected to that habitat
and how it was used as a “provider” by the
Plains Indians. We gave examples of all the ways the buffalo
was used and how nothing was wasted. One of those examples
was to show how the buffalo hides were used as a form
of recordkeeping by the chief to keep track of herd movements,
tribal affairs and more.

As a craft, we had the students make their own “buffalo
hide” drawing, where the students drew pictures
of their family on pieces of leather. Once they finished,
we asked some of the students to share their drawings
and what they represented. The responses were very creative…
in every case the students went into details beyond the
scope of their drawing, using their pictures to represent
a much larger story.
