Culture: Schools

The 2006 Franklin County, PA Migrant Education Program

Week Four:

We continued on the Rainforest Theme. We had First graders so we wanted to keep things simple. We focused on butterflies and the wide diversity of them that exists and originates from the Rainforest. It was a fitting presentation timeframe-wise because we were at the height of the butterfly season locally. For a craft, we had the students make their own butterflies. They were very creative!

We also had our daughters demonstrate the Native American dance, the fancy shawl dance, which is also known as “The Dance of the Butterfly.” We brought extra shawls along so that the students could join with our daughters in dancing this energetic dance. The students did great and loved it.

Some of the first-graders line up for a lesson
in dancing the fancy shawl dance, a dance
often compared to the flight of the butterfly.
